ClearBank Europe Becomes First Dutch Bank to Secure MiCAR Crypto-Asset Status
ClearBank Europe has become the first Dutch credit institution to obtain Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) status under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR), following confirmation from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) on 9 April 2026. The milestone enables the bank to deliver regulated digital asset services across the EU.
As part of its initial rollout, ClearBank Europe will integrate Circle’s Mint platform, providing clients with access to two fully regulated stablecoins: EURC, pegged to the euro, and USDC, pegged to the US dollar.
A New Path Under MiCAR
Unlike traditional CASP licensing, EU credit institutions can access a streamlined notification route under MiCAR. ClearBank is the first Dutch bank to successfully utilize this pathway, marking a significant regulatory and operational precedent.
This approval allows clients to seamlessly transition between fiat currencies and digital assets within a fully regulated banking framework, with ClearBank acting as the institutional counterparty. The bank operates under authorization from the European Central Bank and is supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank.
The achievement represents the first major public milestone in ClearBank Europe’s digital asset strategy, which has been in development since the bank secured its Dutch credit institution license.
Building a Pan-European Digital Asset Infrastructure
ClearBank Group has been steadily expanding its digital asset capabilities across multiple markets. Earlier in 2026, the bank selected Taurus-PROTECT as its wallet infrastructure provider. In the UK, it also strengthened its partnership with Coinbase, supporting a savings product where eligible deposits benefit from Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protection.
With approximately £18 billion in customer deposits, ClearBank provides clearing and embedded banking services to major fintech and financial institutions, including Revolut, Coinbase, and Wealthify. Its European expansion signals the beginning of a broader ambition to deliver digital clearing infrastructure at scale across the continent.
CEO Tristan Kirchner described the MiCAR confirmation as a foundational step into regulated digital clearing, positioning it as the start of a wider phase of growth rather than a standalone achievement.
A Signal to the European Banking Sector
ClearBank’s move is likely to draw close attention from other European banks. While the MiCAR notification route is available to all EU credit institutions, adoption has so far been limited. By successfully completing the process, ClearBank provides a clear regulatory blueprint for peers seeking to enter the digital asset space without establishing separate licensed entities.
As a result, the bank’s early action may accelerate strategic evaluations and adoption of crypto-asset services across the European banking landscape.
