Banco Santander and Mastercard Complete Europe’s First AI Agent Payment

Banco Santander and Mastercard have successfully completed Europe’s first live end-to-end payment executed by an AI agent, marking a major milestone in the development of AI-driven financial transactions. The payment was carried out within a regulated banking environment, demonstrating that AI systems can securely initiate and complete transactions on behalf of customers.

The transaction was conducted by Santander in a controlled testing environment using Mastercard’s Agent Pay technology. To ensure the system worked under real-world conditions, the payment was processed through Santander’s live payments infrastructure, allowing the companies to validate the operational, security, and control frameworks required for AI-driven payments.

Governing the Agentic Economy

The new system allows AI agents to initiate and complete payments on behalf of customers within predefined limits and permissions. This means AI systems can make purchases securely and transparently using existing payment networks while maintaining strict privacy, security, and consumer protection standards.

PayOS handled the end-to-end orchestration of the transaction process. Mastercard Agent Pay integrates AI agents directly into the payment process as governed and visible participants, allowing smooth coordination between banks, merchants, and payment networks.

Matías Sánchez, Global Head of Cards and Digital Solutions at Banco Santander, stated that AI is expected to play a major role in the future of payments. He emphasized that financial institutions must not only adopt AI technologies but also ensure that security, governance, and customer protection are built into the system from the beginning. He added that trusted and scalable frameworks will be necessary as AI agents become more involved in everyday commerce.

Kelly Devine, President of Mastercard Europe, said that agent-driven payments represent a major shift in how transactions are initiated and processed. She noted that Mastercard is applying its long-established principles of security, trust, interoperability, and global scalability to this new era of AI-powered commerce.

Next Steps for AI Payments

The successful pilot project confirms that Santander has the technical capability and operational readiness to support AI-driven payment systems. However, the project is still in the testing phase and has not yet been launched commercially.

Santander plans to continue testing the technology, explore additional use cases, and build partnerships while ensuring that regulatory compliance, system resilience, and security controls remain strong.
