Zeller Expands into UK to Disrupt SME Payments Market, Targets £5.2 Billion in Savings
Zeller has launched its operations in the United Kingdom, marking its first international expansion as it seeks to challenge legacy payment providers and modernize financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The move brings Zeller’s integrated payments and financial platform to the UK’s 5.7 million SMEs, targeting inefficiencies and high costs associated with traditional payment systems.
Tackling a £22.7 Billion Payments Friction Problem
Zeller’s entry comes amid growing concerns over outdated payment infrastructure in the UK. Research conducted by Foresight Factory and commissioned by Zeller found that one in two UK consumers abandon purchases due to checkout friction, putting an estimated £22.7 billion in transactions at risk annually.
CEO Ben Pfisterer highlighted the disconnect between the UK’s fintech reputation and the reality faced by merchants:
“Payments is dominated by legacy providers offering unreliable, outdated, and costly hardware, combined with slow onboarding processes. UK merchants have been underserved for too long.”
All-in-One Platform for Businesses
Zeller aims to address these challenges by offering a fully integrated financial ecosystem that combines:
- Payment processing
- Point-of-sale hardware
- Business accounts
- Invoicing tools
- Expense management
The platform eliminates the need for businesses to rely on multiple disconnected systems, streamlining operations within a single account.
Faster Onboarding and Lower Costs
A key differentiator is Zeller’s digital onboarding process, which allows businesses to set up accounts in under six minutes—compared to an industry average of up to five days, with many traditional providers still requiring in-person verification.
The company is also competing aggressively on pricing, estimating it can reduce card processing fees by up to 35% annually for UK merchants. Across the broader market, this could translate into £5.2 billion in total savings per year.
Early Adoption and Market Potential
Zeller reports strong early interest, with over 100 UK businesses signing up during its pre-launch testing phase.
One early adopter, London-based retailer Ferro Velho, cited the platform’s design and flexibility as key advantages, particularly its ability to integrate seamlessly into existing workflows.
Strategic Growth Beyond Australia
The UK expansion builds on Zeller’s rapid growth in Australia, where it supports more than 100,000 businesses, including major brands such as Domino’s Pizza and SSP Group.
Zeller achieved unicorn status in 2022 following a A$100 million Series B funding round, positioning it for global expansion.
